The case of an autistic boy of 5 that illustrates how homeopathy helped in his case.

Presenting Symptoms: Boy of 5 with severe autism, distress during frequent ear infections with head banging. Runs on tip toes, no spontaneous speech or imaginative play. Intolerant of gluten and chocolate which is excluded from his diet, grinds teeth, mouth ulcers, still in nappies. He is hyperactive at bedtime, has disturbed sleep, delayed pain impulse, rough skin, regurgitates food.

Background : This little boy was thought to be developing normally until his MMR, he had no obvious adverse reactions at the time but stopped smiling afterwards and then started not to interact.

After one prescription: he had some spontaneous speech, saying some phrases, chattering. He became very curious and his sleeping got better, he was no longer hyper at bedtime.

After two prescriptions: He was more outgoing, interacting more with the family, hugged and wanted to be hugged by his consultant, singing and talking to himself. No longer headbanging, no runny nose or ear problems which is unusual. There is still some grinding of the teeth. Now goes to the toilet in the toilet when he is taken.

At the end of three months of homeopathy: Progress continued, he still had not head banging and no longer ground his teeth. His speech developed further and he was playing with younger children. He was sleeping really well and good about going to bed. His pain response normalised and he was more sensitive to his mother when cuddling (not squashing her). He was no longer regurgitating food and his skin was fine. He was walking well (not on tip toes) and he even asked to go to the toilet.

Progress made in this case: This child continued to see me after the initial 3 month pilot project and his consultant said he "seems bright-eyed and alert - wanting to look at everything", his "spontaneous speech is much better". He is now talking well, his non language skills are going well, drawing letters, shapes, counting and he can say the days of the week from memory. His reading by word recognitions is very good. He writes his name, draws houses, shapes, cars and faces. He has grown and is more flexible and more dextrous, he is now able to pick up lots of things at once. He "generalised really well" and was sleeping well and "seems more in his body". He listens to his mother and repeats things she's said in conversation following his mother's instructions. He is now playing imaginatively with cars, building train tracks and playing with Tomy toys. He is role playing with plastic food. No more head-banging or teeth grinding. Skin occasionally rough and he will hit his head with his hand when frustrated.
